If you’re ever in the mood to plan a weekend getaway or a staycation for a couple of days, the great town of Columbus should be on your list. Located on the eastern border of Mississippi, Columbus is also a member city of The Golden Triangle, which comprises of Starkville and West Point.

Grab a plate of catfish at Catfish Alley.

Sited between College and Main Street, Catfish Alley is the right spot to visit for some delicious catfish. This alley, known for the lovely aroma of catfish, used to be a meeting point for African-Americans during the late 1800s. They would gather together with a wagon full of veggies and spices and whip up a delicacy of catfish.

You would also find barbershops, drug stores, cleaners, and cafes lined up on the street. If you happen to visit on the weekends, you’d enjoy some of the best blues performances from the South.

Visit the Mississippi University for Women.

The Mississippi University for Women, known as ‘The W’ was established in 1884 as The Industrial Institute and College. It went through another name change ‘Mississippi State College for Women before settling for the current name.

This gigantic complex houses the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science and over 20 other buildings listed on the Register of Historic Places. You can explore the grounds and soak in the breathtaking views and landscape. 

Visit the Columbus Air Force Base.

Every year, the Columbus Air Force organizes “Wings over Columbus”. This is an event that combines local training aircraft with military aircraft for aerial demonstrations and ground displays. If you’ve got kids, this is one place they can’t afford to miss.

Drop by Tennessee William’s Home and Welcome Center.

The city of Columbus is home to one of America’s Pulitzer prize-winning playwright, Tennessee Williams. Located at 300 Main Street, you will be welcomed by the lovely ground Travel Counselors who will take guide you and your family through this home.

This architectural delight used to be the rectory of the old St. Paul’s Episcopal Church—a cathedral where his grandfather, Rev Walter Dakin, pastored. After nearly facing destruction, the 1875 Victorian home has been restored and now serves as the official welcome center of Tennessee. You can take a stop by the gift shop to take a piece of Columbus home with you. A visit to Columbus is never complete without stopping over this place.

Take a stroll by the Riverwalk.

The Riverwalk, Columbus trails the Tombigbee Waterway, located downtown. This lengthy trail is the destination walk for tourists who visit Columbus. You get the opportunity to meander through fields, hardwoods surrounded by the river.

In case you feel weary after a long walk, there are benches and restrooms provided on either side of the trail. The Riverwalk is open all year to all visitors.
