Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 cup ice water
- 6 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter and mix with a pastry cutter or your hands until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the ice water and mix until the dough comes together. Form the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and place a baking sheet in the oven to preheat as well.
- In a separate mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss well to coat the apples evenly.
- Remove the dough from the refrigerator and divide it into two equal portions. Roll out one portion on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch (23 cm) pie dish.
- Transfer the rolled-out dough to the pie dish and press it against the bottom and sides.
- Pour the apple mixture into the pie dish and dot the top with the melted butter.
- Roll out the second portion of dough and place it on top of the apple filling.
- Trim and crimp the edges of the pie crust to seal it.
- Make small slits on the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Place the pie on the preheated baking sheet in the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before serving.
